QB Invaders
First Impression Every great game has copies - clones of it made. Tetris had Puyo Puyo and Dr. Mario, Final Fantasy was the first really sucessful computer RPG, and started a huge craze and is still having clones and sequels made today, and then comes Space Invaders. One of the first computer games ever written, and one of the most sucessful. It has had hundreds of clones made and it's popularity still shows today, with re releases of the original game for the N64, Game Boy and Playstation consoles. Here is one Tim Truman's attempt to re-create Space Invaders in all it's glory.
What It's Like If you haven't played Space Invaders, then, must I say 'you're weird'. It is the classic alien combat game where you move a canon back and forth on the ground, trying to kill of the alien as they slowly descend and kill you. That's not all, though. The aliens can also shoot you on their own, and you have three 'bunkers' that protect you from enemy fire, but every shot slowly deteriorates the block.

Graphics These graphics are great! The aliens are really cool, the tank and bunkers are okay, and the high score screen is beautiful. This is the main difference between the original Space Invaders that I've noticed also -- the color and the graphical improvement.

Gameplay/Control To move, you use the alt and ctrl keys, and to shoot, you use space bar. This works fine once you get used to it, but the first couple seconds cause confusion, because you press the wrong key to move in the direction you want. Once you get used to it, it's fine, though. If it was up to me, I would have used the left and right arrow keys for movement, and either up or space to shoot. Overall good job on this, though!

Overall Impression Not an original idea, but all original code. Excellent graphics, good control, and the original game play is intact. The original fun and addictive game is here in a new format, and that's as simple as it gets. I'm a big fan of Space Invaders, and to see a good SI clone in QB makes my day.
