|First Impression||Before you run maingame.exe, run gbfinal.exe . It just blows you away! An excellent 3D racer in QBASIC! (Too bad that's not the game.) Now run maingame.exe . Wow, a really good racing game! You race against 5 other cars on a variety of tracks getting ever harder. It's a really cool game, but it's a little hard.|
|What It's Like||In this demo, you're everyone's favorite hedgehog, Sonic, and you jump on spikes, spin dash, curl into a ball when you jump, run around, and that's about it. You can't die, so jump on those spikes and watch Sonic fly off with a funny look on his face (just like in the game), spin dash, jump from island to island, etc. This looks like an exact copy of the Sega Genesis game (graphics ripped, except for crappy background graphics), and with music from the game. Try it!|
|Other things you should know||The music and character graphics are ripped, but who really cares. This is supposed to be a clone in the end, with different levels. Play it, it's pretty cool!|
The graphics are directly ripped from the Genesis game, but they have a very smooth engine, and are cool. They have been dithered and mosiaced to fit in the color and resolution limitations, so aren't completely the same. The background graphics suck, though. There's no other way to describe them.
This program uses Qmidi, with music directly ripped from Sonic The Hedgehog, Scene 1-1. I like the music, though. Since it's ripped, and uses Qmidi, though, I have to give it a...
The gameplay is simple. Press the left(4) and right(6) arrow keys (the numerical pad ones) to move, and Left Control to jump. To spindash, press Down (2) to spindash. I don't like the fact that you have to press two to spindash, or the fact that you have to use numerical keypad arrows to move, so he gets four out of five stars.
There is no story for this game demo. The origianl Sonic didn't have much of a story either. This is basically a demo of the engine, so this doesn't count.
The first impression was good, but then I noticed little quicrks and junk that I didn't like. The gameplay used the numerical keypad instead of the "real" arrows, the graphics were ripped, so was the music, the unripped background images were crappy, but the game is cool! Jump on the spikes for a laugh, It's got all the original graphics features, and other neat stuff. This brings back old memories, with the song and the graphics. Try it out!
