On the eighteenth of April...

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every _MOUSEX village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."
.....
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Just an American reminder of today's date.

Thanks, Moneo!

Interesting how it takes someone from Mexico to remind us Americans about our heritage. The only nearby date that I recall is April 20th; Adolph Hitler's birthday.

Actually, I merely live in Mexico, but I am an American, by birth, by upbringing, and by heart.

Cool, I didn't know that. What brought you to Sunny Mexico?

Long story. My wife was born in Mexico and could not adjust to living in the States. So, in 1983, we moved down to Mexico City where her family is. I was lucky and was able to find a programming job right away.

I am not too keen on Mexico. There are a lot of things that piss off an old gringo from New York.

You mean like no one speaking english and you being white around all the mexicans? Or is it just the poverty? Sorry, I'm just kind of interested in this kind of stuff (when I'm not too lazy, anyway).

Speaking or not speaking English, is not a problem 'cause I'm also fluent in Spanish. What is annoying about this is that many, many people here, mostly women, have degrees or majors in English or English associate degrees, which they flaunt to others. But, when a guest comes into the office who only speaks English, or when a report of some kind needs to be written in English, then these English experts run and hide, or find a native English speaking person like me to solve their problem.

Not all Mexicans are dark-skinned. Many are direct descendants of immigrants from Spain and other European countries. As you would expect, the majority of people who are financially well off, are white. However, the ratio of darker people to whites is growing. There's not much white immigration anymore, and intermarriage is also prevalent. Asian immigration is now becoming noticeable. In general, Asians tend to occupy a higher financial status.

There is a high awareness of poverty in Mexico, especially if you get into rural areas. Poverty, and the related lack of education, is a constant concern of the goverment.

To speak or not to speak... that's the question...

It's doesn't matter who you are, where you from, what you talk...

Did I make a typo error? If so, where? If not, what are you talking about?
