Microsoft making more of the Windows 10 built-in apps removable
The ability to remove these apps doesn't really mean much in terms of disk space or convenience, as none of them are very big. The move may be of more interest to corporate deployments; an organization that has standardized on Outlook, for example, might want to remove the Mail and Calendar apps to reduce user confusion.
Laptop Google Chrome does not relaunch after updates:
Version 70.0.3538.67 (Official Build) (32-bit)

Microsoft’s problem isn’t how often it updates Windows—it’s how it develops it
The problem with Windows as a Service is quality. Previous issues with the feature and security updates have already shaken confidence in Microsoft's updating policy for Windows 10. While data is notably lacking, there is at the very least a popular perception that the quality of the monthly security updates has taken a dive with Windows 10 and that installation of the twice-annual feature updates as soon as they're available is madness. These complaints are long-standing, too. The unreliable updates have been a cause for concern since shortly after Windows 10's release.
YET Microsoft sure knows how to slow down Chrome!

NEXT computer will be LINUX! Had enough of this crap!

Microsoft is positioning Always-Connected PCs as the future of business devices
Speaking of Windows 10 in S Mode, which Microsoft has been working to get OEMs to ship on PCs -- especially Always Connected ones -- there will be a new requirement in Windows 10 1809 (the October Update) for Windows 10 Pro in S Mode devices. Devices running Pro in S Mode will be required to have Internet Connectivity as an out-of-the-box requirement, and will require users to log in with Azure Active Directory if those devices are enrolled in AutoPilot, as officials noted at the Microsoft Ignite IT pro conference.
Windows 10 Bug Allowed UWP Apps Full Access to File System
A bug in Windows 10 allowed UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps to have access to the entire file system in Windows without permission from the user. This could have allowed a malicious app to access any data stored on the computer without the knowledge or consent of the user.
Microsoft Adds Linux Perks to Windows 10 October 2018 Update
Microsoft is adding more perks to its beleaguered Windows 10 October 2018 Update (also known as version 1809), which is still suspended after a botched Oct. 2 release. The fixed release, which could come next week, will have a few added options for Windows Subsystem for Linux users,

This week, Microsoft announced that the Windows Subsystem for Linux will support additional Linux distros. The supported distros, currently available from the Microsoft Store, include:

Ubuntu 18.04
OpenSuse 15 and Suse Linux Enterprise Server 15
WLinux

These Linux distros additionally can be installed manually using the Windows Console command-line interface, Microsoft's announcement indicated.
Yeah M$ also makes apps for Android and Apple devices yet little for its own devices

Erratic Windows 10 Bug Breaks Changing of Default File Associations
Windows 10 users are stating that when they try to change the default program used to open a particular file extension, such as .txt files, they are unable to associate it with popular Notepad replacements such as Notepad++. On the other hand, they have no problem changing the file association to a different one.

Windows 10 activation bug baffles, angers users
Microsoft is working on a fix for a bug in its activation server that has caused Windows 10 Pro machines to report that their license has not been activated.

The issue was causing panic for some Windows 10 users who reported on Reddit that the bug "deactivated" Windows because it switched the machine from Pro to Home, and those licenses didn't match.
Alexa now available on Windows 10 PCs in Windows Store
Amazon is releasing its Alexa app for Windows 10 today. While the app has been available on select Windows 10 laptops recently, today marks its launch in the Microsoft Store for all Windows 10 PCs. You can download and install it on any Windows 10 PC, but only compatible devices will support Alexa wake word functionality. If you don’t have a compatible PC then you can hit the button within the app to speak to Alexa, or invoke the assistant using a keyboard shortcut.

Windows-as-a-service fail: Microsoft keeps customers in the dark
The closest equivalent for Windows 10 is the Windows 10 Update History page, which offers documentation concerning feature updates and cumulative reliability and security updates. That page shows that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) was released on October 2, 2018. Over the next four days, an unknown number of Microsoft customers downloaded and installed that update.

Several days later, Microsoft pulled that release from its update servers and took the unprecedented step of also removing the installation files from its download servers. At that time, the company revised the text on Update History page to include this note: "We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809)* for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating."

Microsoft says all of those issues were fixed in cumulative updates that were released on October 16 and October 20, respectively. But if you were one of the enthusiastic souls who downloaded and installed version 1809 in the first week that it was available, you have not received those updates. To get the fixes for what are undeniably serious bugs in a version of Windows 10 that was released through public channels, you have to add your device to the Windows Insider Program and choose the Slow or Release Preview Ring.
Last desktop update was October 9, 2018—KB4464330 (OS Build 17763.55) on October 16 V1809

New Windows 10 1809 block: Microsoft halts update if you use flawed Intel drivers
The update is blocked for users with Intel display drivers versions 24.20.100.6344 and 24.20.100.6345. Microsoft has provided instructions on its answers forum to check if your PC is affected.

"Microsoft is working with Intel to expire these display drivers, including coordinating with OEMs, and will provide an update on the resolution in an upcoming release," the company said.

Microsoft emphasizes this issue is different from the one affecting the Intel Smart Sound Technology (ISST) Driver, which again was inadvertently released by Intel and caused problems with audio on Windows 10 1809 and 1803 PCs.

Last week Microsoft blocked the Windows 10 1809 update for PCs with iCloud for Windows due to an incompatibility issue. The company is also working on a fix for a known issue affecting mapped drives, which it expects to deliver by the end of November.
To determine if your PC is affected

1. Right click the Start menu and click Device Manager in drop down menu list.

2. Find and expand Display adapters.

3. Right-click on the Intel® HD Graphics device.

4. Select Properties.

5. Click the Driver tab.

6. Check your driver version. If the driver version is listed as either 24.20.100.6344, or 24.20.100.6345, your system is affected by this issue. Please contact Microsoft support for a resolution. Once you’ve confirmed your device has the incompatible driver, please contact Microsoft support directly at 1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area.

A Microsoft agent can resolve the issue by running a file on your device that will turn off the feature that is incompatible with these Intel drivers.

Latest Windows 10 update breaks Windows Media Player, Win32 apps in general
The important data loss bug that interrupted the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, version 1809, may be fixed, but it turns out there are plenty of other weird problems with the release.

As spotted by Paul Thurrott, the update also breaks the seek bar in Windows Media Player when playing "specific files."
Chrome browser still needs to be closed and reopened on laptop when slow (2-3 days).
Version 70.0.3538.110 (Official Build) (32-bit) updated manually yesterday

64 bit desktop update: November 13, 2018—KB4467708 (OS Build 17763.134) version 1809

32 bit laptop: 2018-11 Cumulative Update KB4467682 for Windows 10 Version 1803

Serious problems with Chrome on 32 bit laptop after update!
Have had to close it every day since update to get it to run well. Slows computer down too at times.

New errors from RuntimeBroker:

Microsoft is building a Chromium-powered web browser that will replace Edge on Windows 10
Many will be happy to hear that Microsoft is finally adopting a different rendering engine for the default web browser on Windows 10. Using Chromium means websites should behave just like they do on Google Chrome in Microsoft's new Anaheim browser, meaning users shouldn't suffer from the same instability and performance issues found in Edge today. This is the first step towards revitalizing Windows 10's built-in web browser for users across PCs and phones. Edge on iOS and Android already uses rendering engines native to those platforms, so not much will be changing on that front.
Why, in 2018, is Microsoft adding security questions to Windows 10?
The problem, the researchers said, is that the password reset questions are too easy to set and too hard to monitor in networks made up of hundreds or thousands of computers. A single person with administrator credentials can remotely turn them on or change them on any Windows 10 machine and there’s no simple way for the changes to be monitored or changed. As a result, malicious users—say a rogue employee or a hacker who briefly gains unauthorized administrative control—can use the security questions as a backdoor that will secretly allow them to regain control should they ever lose it.

How a major bug in the Windows 10 October 2018 Update slipped past Microsoft
Those that really were suffering from deleted files reported the exact same symptoms in the Feedback Hub. They didn't know what the cause of the issue was, so they merely stated that their files had been deleted. Known Folder Redirection was the culprit, but Insiders didn't know that at first. Long story short, Microsoft had mistaken one bug for another, so it did not address the new reports right away.
Latest Windows Insider build makes a major upgrade to, uh… Notepad
Notepad is also going to support a convention that's literally decades old: when the currently loaded file has been modified, an asterisk will be shown in the title bar.

And on top of all that, there are some new keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl-Shift-N to open a new Notepad window from within Notepad, Ctrl-Shift-S to Save As..., and Ctrl-W to close the current window. At this rate, can some kind of tabbed Notepad be far behind? And perhaps more usefully, Notepad has been updated to work with paths longer than 260 characters.
Windows 10 Sends Your Activity History to Microsoft, Even if You Tell It Not To
Windows 10 collects an “Activity History” of applications you launch on your PC and sends it to Microsoft. Even if you disable or clear this, Microsoft’s Privacy Dashboard still shows an “Activity History” of applications you’ve launched on your PCs.

This problem was recently discussed on Reddit, and it’s pretty easy to confirm. Head to Settings > Privacy > Activity History and disable “Send my activity history to Microsoft.” It was already disabled on our PC, so it made this easy to test.
Desktop: 2018-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4471332)

Laptop: 2018-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x86-based Systems (KB4471324)

Microsoft admits Activity History “naming issue,” explains how to turn off Privacy Dashboard browsing history
1) Under Settings -> Privacy -> Activity history, make sure that “Let Windows sync my activities from this PC to the cloud” is not checked.

2) Under Settings -> Privacy -> Diagnostics & feedback, make sure that Diagnostic data is set to “Basic” (when set to “Full,” information about websites you browse is sent to Microsoft).

We made the test on one of our PCs this morning, and no web browsing data has been collected so far. In the end, the problem seems to be that turning everything off in “Activity History” doesn’t actually turn everything off, and privacy-conscious users currently have to look elsewhere to completely disable sharing Windows 10 apps and services Activity History with Microsoft. The company may well be committed to customer privacy, but this is another case where the execution could probably be much better.

Careful! Windows 10's 'Check for updates' button may download beta code
In a blog post this week, Microsoft revealed that those users who click the “Check for updates” button (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) are opted in to testing new Windows features on a one-time basis, if they happen to click the button during the third and fourth week of the month. Microsoft calls those updates “C” and “D” releases, and issues them to those who are “seeking” them when they click the update button.
Microsoft admits non-insiders are beta testing Windows updates
"The intent of these releases is to provide visibility into, and enable testing of, the non-security fixes that will be included in the next Update Tuesday release."

Former Microsoft Edge Intern Claims Google Callously Broke Rival Web Browsers
However, some of the onus also falls on Microsoft. Since Edge is coupled with the Windows 10 operating system, major updates to the browser only come twice a year. Competing browsers like Chrome and Firefox are updated on a much more frequent basis, with the latter being better insulated from any perceived Google trickery. For its part, the move to Chromium will allow Microsoft to decouple Edge from Windows 10 and update it more frequently.

What's interesting about this whole situation is that Microsoft Edge really isn't even a threat to Chrome's browser dominance (and neither is Firefox). Edge never became the dominant force in the browser market that Microsoft hoped it would be -- even though it's the default web browser in Windows 10. Or if we look at it from a more suspicious eye, maybe the reason that Edge hasn't been more popular is exactly because of these alleged Google tactics (something that Microsoft knows a thing or two about from its own past transgressions).
Perhaps the move to Chromium will allow M$ Edge to run slower too...

Contrary to M$'s statements, I have gotten 4 W10 updates this month without looking for them:

How Microsoft lost the web
That meant Microsoft abandoned almost all of its customers to the competition. At the beginning of 2016, about 89% of all Windows PCs ran Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1. Nearly 9 out of every 10 Windows machines, then, looked at a dead-man-walking browser if they ran IE. With IE in stasis, and Chrome and Firefox upgrading seven or eight times annually, it's no surprise that users deserted IE for something fresher.
Updating to Windows 10 1809 Deactivates Built-in Administrator Account
A reactivated built-in Administrator account will be automatically deactivated when upgrading from Windows 10 version 1803 to Windows 10 version 1809 according to a post published on Microsoft's Japanese Technet blog.

"We are currently working on solving this problem, and at the moment we aim to release a patch in late January 2019," says Microsoft. "Therefore, if you need to upgrade before the patch is released, please confirm that you can surely sign in with a user with administrative privileges other than the built-in Administrator, before you upgrade."
Microsoft will finally allow Windows 10 Home users to pause updates 7 days
In Windows 10 Home, you can delay the update by telling the system that you’re you’re using a metered connection but this trick may not work in long run.

This behaviour is about to change as the software giant is working on a new feature which can delay the updates for up to seven days.

Update: January 8, 2019—KB4480966 (OS Build 17134.523)

Windows opened with Chrome browser already running as it should finally. No notification that the PC was updated...

Windows 10 Version 1903 to grab 7GB of your storage so big updates don't fail
In the next major release of Windows 10, Microsoft will reserve 7GB of your device's storage to resolve a Windows 10 bug thrown up by Windows Update not checking whether a PC has enough storage space before launching after big updates.

In Windows 10 19H1, or version 1903 when it's released this year, Microsoft is introducing 'reserved storage', which will keep around 7GB of disk space -- but possibly more -- available purely so that updates can be installed smoothly.

Reserved storage won't be unused though. It'll be a dumping ground for temporary files that users would have to remove anyway if they've got insufficient space at the time of an update. Temporary files are automatically placed in reserved storage.
Windows 10 19H1: All the changes we know so far
Microsoft is now hard at work on the next feature update for Windows 10, codenamed 19H1 and scheduled for release this April. This update is expected to include yet more changes, new features, and further UI refinements and improvements.
Microsoft is separating Cortana from search in Windows 10
Microsoft is making some big changes to Cortana in Windows 10. The software giant is planning to decouple search and Cortana in the Windows 10 taskbar, allowing voice queries to be handled separately to typing in a search box to find documents and files. This change will be implemented in the next major Windows 10 update, currently scheduled for April. Windows 10 will direct you towards a built-in search experience for text queries, while Cortana will exist for voice queries instead of them both bundled together.

It’s Official: Satya Nadella Confirms Cortana Defeat
Microsoft announced that it would integrate Cortana with Amazon Alexa, and it finally enabled the first version of that integration last year. But Nadella confirmed that he wants to work with Google Assistant as well.

“You should also be able to use [Cortana] on Google Assistant,” he also reportedly said. “You should be able to use it on Alexa, just like you use our apps on Android or iOS. So that’s at least how we want to go.”

1809 desktop PC now cannot find the hard drive...

WTGO M$! Made the decision for me did you...

Desktop went to DOS with warning to choose a boot option. Reboots did same thing. Decided to replace 2032 battery
which necessitated taking out the CD and hard drive to get to. Replaced and got 5 beeps several times. Found bent pins
on CD SATA power cable so I straightened them and it finally booted with BIOS renewed and press F1 to continue or F2 to
Setup. Pressed F1 and it went to Windows 10. Login password took a while to come up after several mouse clicks.

Black screen for THREE MINUTES and then a SLOW layout of desktop icons ensued... 3 minutes later I could finally go to
Settings and check updates below:

Image
Note that there is also NO OPTION to Check for Updates or Retry... just reboot

Image

Reboot did not finish any updates, but now Update found some:
Image

Chrome browser came up automatically like it is supposed to which it had not done on either W10 PC.
ADS started coming too! One refused to go away despite many clicks on Close...

General response time to clicks and keyboard entries is SLOW to abysmal

Laptop got following update ‎1/‎30/‎2019: KB4100347: Intel microcode updates
Applies to: Windows Server version 1803 Windows 10, version 1803
Intel recently announced that it has completed its validations and started to release microcode for recent CPU platforms related to Spectre Variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715 [“Branch Target Injection”]). This update includes microcode updates from Intel for the following CPUs:
Laptop seems to wake up better recently with Chrome working better,

Many Windows 10 Users Unable to Connect to Windows Update Service
Many users on outage pages and Twitter are stating that this is an ISP DNS issue. For example, users of Comcast or Xfinity reported that switching their DNS servers to Google's 8.8.8.8 DNS service solved their problems.
They should be rejoicing perhaps...

Windows 10 19H1: We'll fix confusing setup error messages, promises Microsoft
Microsoft has finally realized that many average users have no idea what a KB and its numerical ID are and don't know what to do when they appear in a Windows 10 setup error notification.

These notifications are shown when a version of an app isn't compatible with the latest version of Windows 10 and needs to be updated or uninstalled and then reinstalled.

Currently on Windows 10, Microsoft doesn't link to the KB article in setup error notifications, while 'back' and 'refresh' buttons don't necessarily match up with the error message itself.
Microsoft really doesn’t want you to buy Office 2019
On the flipside, Office 2019 also delivers full installs of the Office apps we know and love — but they’re “frozen in time.” They don’t ever get updated with new features, and they’re not cloud-connected. Also, Office 2019 doesn’t support real-time coauthoring across apps, and it doesn’t have the amazing AI-powered capabilities that come with Office 365.

Microsoft launches new Office app for Windows 10
The existing My Office app has many of these features, but the new Office app puts the focus on the free online versions of Office if you’re not an Office 365 subscriber. That’s something Microsoft has struggled to promote, and many consumers simply don’t know that office.com exists and Microsoft has free online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. A number of consumers also assume Office simply comes as part of Windows, so renaming this app to Office and surfacing online versions of Office apps will certainly help there, too.

You can download the new Office app from the Microsoft Store, and it’s rolling out to existing Windows 10 users over the coming weeks.
New Windows 10 builds are using Xbox's infrastructure for Windows games.
The State of Decay package does nonetheless contain PC-oriented elements. In particular, it tries to install and update the DirectX runtime during its setup. We the users don't seem to be at the stage of simply running Xbox games unmodified on our PCs, or at least, not yet. But it looks as if the groundwork is being laid. The strange preview of a 2020 Windows release looks like it contains even more of this infrastructure, with signs of a layer to support Xbox's Direct3D variant on PC.
But will older Windows PC's like my 32 bit XP laptop be able to USE that Direct3D???

Windows 10 should never reboot your PC without your express permission, researchers conclude
The paper’s conclusions are fairly straightforward: Users need more information about updates and more control over when they happen, and Microsoft should simply never reboot the PC to install an update when the system’s in active use. While the users polled by the study ultimately concluded that the updates have value, the study’s authors concluded that Windows did not explicitly notify users of what update it was applying (a security patch versus a feature update) and about how much time that update would take.
Anti-cheat gaming software causing big problems for Windows 10 previews
Either way, there seems to be something of an impasse. Microsoft hasn't reverted whatever change is causing the crashes in the first place, but it has been a problem for months and is having a significant impact on the company's Windows 10 testing infrastructure. The entire testing pipeline has seized up because of this GSOD problem. Amid concerns that Windows 10's testing already has too many gaps and leaves too many bugs unresolved, the April 2019 update is off to a rocky start, and it isn't even finished yet.

Update: While the GSOD of death issue remains, Microsoft has at last pushed a build to the Slow Ring, number 18342.8. To avoid crashing machines, the build won't be offered to any system that has the offending anti-cheat software installed. It's not clear why this approach could not have been used months ago.

The real reason that Microsoft is already testing a 2020 Windows release? Azure
That means, however, that Azure needs to catch up, and apparently this has shaken up the release timetable a bit. The Windows 10 April 2019 Update is almost here, built on the December 2018 internal release. Normally, that work would then be stabilized and baked into a June 2019 release, which would have been codenamed Vanadium, with that release used as the basis for Xbox, Windows, and Windows Server development in the second half of the year. But this year, the June 2019 release is being skipped. We're still going to get an October 2019 feature update, but that too will be based on the December 2018 release. The Windows core platform won't see an internal release (codenamed Vibranium) until December 2019.
Microsoft is creating Windows Lite for dual-screen and Chromebook-like devices
Microsoft might be targeting dual-screen devices initially, but the longer plan is for Windows Lite to help the company better compete against Chromebooks. Microsoft has previously tried restricting Windows 10 with an S Mode to just Microsoft Store apps, but most of the legacy of the Windows interface remains. Microsoft is now looking to ship something a lot more basic with Windows Lite and build on top of it for more complexity down the line.

It’s not clear exactly when Microsoft will ship Windows Lite or what it will eventually be named. The software maker has been experimenting with these ideas for years, as it has watched Chrome OS grow in popularity throughout schools in the US. Microsoft is holding its Build conference in Seattle in early May, and that would be an ideal opportunity to start revealing parts of its Windows Lite strategy, especially if it wants developers to build native app and web experiences for dual-screen and Chromebook-like devices./quote]
