How to keep Microsoft updating XP and IE 8

Post by burger2227 »

The following registry hack will keep updates coming to XP machines:

http://malwaretips.com/threads/microsof ... ack.27662/" target="_blank

this method uses a text file named with a .REG extension that you click on to add to your registry.

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001
I did the hack manually in Regedit by adding the Key and the hexadecimal value in the right click registry editor menu.
Image
Warning! Do not make any RegEdit changes to existing keys or settings! Use the right click New menu to add the PosReady key and Installed Dword hex value.
The Default REG_SZ value will already be created when adding the second value.

Within minutes of rebooting, my XP laptop was getting Updates:
Image

The following is a list of updates available at Microsoft Update:
Image

As you can see, I got an update to IE 8 which was also cut off. It even mentions PosReady!

More than that, though, Microsoft says that the hack can actually do more harm than good. They issued a statement to ZDNet explaining their position on the issue:

We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

That does make sense, but if you want to take the risk anyway, you can find the hack and more information from the ZDNet article.
http://malwaretips.com/threads/microsof ... ack.27662/" target="_blank

I DON'T BELIEVE IT! The Updates are meant for XP users who pay for them. IE 8 is dead EXCEPT FOR XP so at least we can USE A SAFER BROWSER than the one Microsoft ABANDONED! That's where the real DANGER IS. Surfing the web!

The latest POS update was 19 on another XP that wasn't updated until today.

At the very least, I would update Internet Explorer 8 to use it in XP. Chrome is still updating so far.

So is Java and Adobe. A note about Java: Some older versions should be kept or some older software may quit working.

My XP laptop has developed a recurring error that just shows up in an annoying OK error box:

Image

It comes up a few times a day even though I don't use Internet Explorer at all. I don't see any other affects.

Investigation on the web found that IEframe.dll may be a problem if a newer version has been installed. The preferred XP IE version is 8.00.6001.23286.

This kind of problem could come from updates that somehow over update an XP computer through POS. I'm just guessing on this so far!

this seems to be good stuff but how long will it all (the web) remain backward compatible? I mean they want you to buy a new machine twice a year and a OS upgrade four times a year right.

I am guessing my xp machine will out live me anyway especially the way politics is going this past decade.
I am guessing this fact will really suck to people who got them brain implants. what will they do if they suddenly get the blue screen?

I myself openly admit to the life long "science fever" but I really wish they'd stop pushing new technology forward and just try to absorb, understand, use current tech. everything got so small/integrated non human repairable everything is made disposable now.

EVERYTHING!!!!

to me this seems as anti-American, (ANTI_HUMANITY) as can be possible. if technology gets any smaller it will cease to exist!

to me logic suggest, this only depletes natural resource at an exponential rate...STOP THE INSANITY!!

I have been watching the updates roll in, all I am seeing is Microsoft office updates, killbits for it nothing for Xp.. am I missing something?

I yanked the "ie8 and office pro" out a few years back, with the last attack I dealt with. now a new browser "my secret" as far as public forums go any way. I never used office, nothing but spreadsheets IMO. I used .dat text files to cover that just never was one for key-stroking and macros.."BS"..IMO.

do we expect any windows updates that apply to windows in our windows updates?

You must have installed the registry hack wrong. I get updates for POS and WEPOS and updates for IE 8. Try looking in the registry for it.

I always did get updates for Office 2007.

About this error:

Image

I believe it may be caused by Verizon Agent so I'm removing it from my SATA XP programs to see if that cures it.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id- ... pybot.html

Removing Verizon Agent did not resolve the startup error.

On another note, XP will no longer get updates for MSE or the Malicious Software Removal Tool(MSRT) this week.
I plan on using AVG AV and Malware Bytes and Anti Exploit and Anti-malware until 2016...
http://www.computerworld.com/article/29 ... -down.html

My third Dell XP desktop machine started to update MSRT yesterday and the updates stopped midway!
I had to Cancel updates at MSRT, reboot and go to Microsoft Update site myself to get the others later.

Removing Verizon Agent did not resolve the startup error.

XP POS (Point of Sale) updates are still coming and updating IE!

Chrome browser updates discontinue in April, 2016 for XP.
Image
Update Adobe Flash PPAPI manually using the update for Chrome or Chromium.

Internet Explorer 8 may still be updated with POS. If not, do Adobe Flash ActiveX manually also...
Flash Updates may be done in the Help menu manually.

Chrome XP and Vista updates will end in April! Version 49.0.2623.110 m
Image
XP and Vista will no longer update after March. Update Chrome now using Menu...Help...About

Note to 64 bit Windows users! Get Chrome 64 bit to browse faster with updated Flash.
Chrome does not automatically update 64 bit PC's to the 64 bit version.

Check Menu Help/About: 64 bit should be stated after the Chrome version number.

Dropbox Ending Support for Windows XP on August 29th
On June 26, 2016, the Dropbox desktop app for Windows XP will no longer be available for download on dropbox.com. Signing in to an existing account or creating a new account will also no longer be possible on Windows XP.

On August 29, 2016, the Dropbox desktop app will no longer support Windows XP. On this date, you will be automatically signed out of any Dropbox accounts linked to a Windows XP computer. You can sign in again once you update to Windows Vista or a later version of Windows.
Email from Drop Box on August 31:
We're reaching out to let you know that Dropbox no longer supports the Windows XP operating system and Windows Vista is the minimum required Windows version to run the Dropbox desktop application. Since one or more of your computers was recently running the Dropbox desktop application (client) on this operating system, you've been signed out of the Dropbox desktop application on those computer(s). These devices will no longer be able to access the Dropbox desktop application and/or send and receive Dropbox file updates.

Don’t worry – your files and photos haven't gone anywhere. To continue using the Dropbox desktop application you can follow Microsoft's instructions to update to Windows Vista or later. If you're unable to update your operating system, you can continue to access your files through the Dropbox website.

If you have multiple computers running the Dropbox desktop application, you can visit your Dropbox account settings to view which of your devices are still linked to Dropbox.

For more information, please visit our Help Center.

Microsoft Update quit working in one of my XP machines:
Image
Error - 0x80072EFF

MalwareBytes found 12 PUP infections with ReImage name:
Image
4 in Registry, 4 system files and 4 Heuristic. Now all quarantined.

Without the Microsoft Update site, I have to download updates from Windows Catalog:
Image
The catalog opens a page for downloading all 90 that I found, but then each one needs run...

Then I used Belarc Advisor to find missing Important and Office 2007 Critical Updates!
Image
Some refused to install so I downloaded them in order as listed above. Only installed 5 and went to bed.

Lost internet connection next morning. Reboot brought up 34 Updates immediately from gold Shield:
Image
I still had more than 70 POSready updates to install from MyDocuments...
Now that Updates are coming to me, I will wait to see what happens...

Two Updates in an hour! Decide to reboot and no more Updates come.
Installing each update takes FOREVER! Unzips files, runs installer with prompt to start and finish!
Each one does an inventory, Creates a Restore Point, installs and cleans up. Each takes at least 10 minutes with person monitoring each install. Do IE 8 ones first as it really SUCKS!

The following fix may work. Have not tried it yet...

Windows Update Error - 0x80072EFF [Solved]

After you download updates from Windows Update Catalog you have to click on the EXE to unzip files
Image
And run the installation file. Click Next

Click I Agree or you will never get anything done...
Image
Click Next!

After that, sit back and wait for inspection, configuration and inventories:
Image
If the update was already installed or requires other updates first, the install may quit and give a notice.

Next we wait for it to create a Restore Point. Cancel button fade means installation will begin:
Image
Installation normally takes only seconds!

Cleanup may take several minutes
Image

The Finish page will reboot if you do not check the box. Then click Finish!
Image
Not all installs require a reboot and it is not necessary to reboot after every update!

After installing 20 more updates, the Update Shield came back with 32 more!
I let Windows Update install the NET Framework stuff as it took all night...many hours

Sunday's Restore Point count says I actually installed 48!

Internet Explorer 8 has been slow, full page and intermittent.

How to repair Internet Explorer video

In Conrol Panel go to Internet Options
Image

In the Advanced Tab click the Reset button. I also removed personal stuff as I seldom use IE.
Image
I did not have to even restart my XP PC!
Microsoft Update came right up!

IE 8 immediately came up as a smaller window when clicking the Microsoft Update program in Start Menu:
Image
I then had to install the Active X add-on for the Update site. Google Search bar is gone...

Should have tried this first...clicking Review Update History created ERROR 0x800A138F
Possibly an idea to re-register the Windows Update dll files. To do that, please follow these steps:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
- Click OK
- This should make a box pop up telling you it was successful, just need to click ok.

Repeat that with the following files (remember to prefix each with regsvr32 ):
wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wucltui.dll
wups.dll
wups2.dll
wuweb.dll

Once you have done that, try running Windows Update again please.

On my XP/7 desktop, IE 8 did not function on the Microsoft Update site even after resetting as in previous post:
Image
The progress bar never moves even after downloading the new Active X addon. The page looks worse too!

So I went to the Windows Update Catalog and by then the Update Shield was displayed on the taskbar right...
Wednesday it downloaded 10 and Thursday the shield showed up again...downloading 0% for quite a bit.

Eventually I got 2 more updates for Internet Explorer 8...they did not improve the site performance anyhow.

Going to the site may be all that is necessary to have the update shield do all of the work...

Catalog says No new XP WEPOS or POSReady updates since July of 2016:
Image
Why older updates are first is beyond me...

Update for WEPOS and POSReady 2009 (KB3148851) Windows XP Embedded Update Rollups 4/11/2016

Says rollup was already installed.

Then Windows Update actually worked on my XP/7 machine:
Image

TWICE!
Image
Second try on Microsoft Office or Windows Media Center.

Original 32 bit XP PRO machine played tough all day! 82 Malware items!
No gold shield all day, just Internet Explorer locking up after scanning M$ Update for hours...
Used Belarc Advisor to download directly 6 KB updates that were all for Office 2007.
Finally after reboot the next day. 12 more WEPOS (WES09 XP) or POSReady 2009 updates came on the shield.
Image

Also updated Java (said it needed newer OS) and Flash PPAPI for Chrome

Check Flash player in appropriate browser

Copy: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html

Found my Roll'em Up pinball game too! Still works pretty cool.

52% of businesses still running Windows XP, despite support ending in 2014
When it comes to the overall share of the different operating systems, the percentage of each OS relative to the total number of machines it is running on breaks down like this:

Windows 7 - 69%
Windows XP - 14%
Windows 10 - 9%
Windows 8 - 5%
Windows Vista - 1%
Windows Vista and Windows 8 I skipped altogether...

Microsoft reneges on update policy to push out patch for unsupported Windows XP and Windows 8 to help defend against ransomware attack
The vulnerability does not exist within Windows 10, the latest version of the software, but is present in all versions of Windows prior to that, dating back to Windows XP.

As a result of Microsoft’s first patch, users of Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 can easily protect themselves against the main route of infection by running Windows Update on their systems. In fact, fully updated systems were largely protected from WanaCrypt0r even before Friday, with many of those infected having chosen to delay installing the security updates.

Users of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 8 can defend against the ransomware by downloading the new patch from Windows.

Microsoft warns of 'destructive cyberattacks,' issues new Windows XP patches
Last month's devastating WannaCry ransomware outbreak was just a warning shot. In an unprecedented move, Microsoft today released critical security updates to block another wave of similar attacks, making those patches available on unsupported versions like Windows XP and Server 2003.
