Uh... what's an Avatar? How do create one? I want to add a picture to my posts.

you can get avatars online or just get an image that you like and scale it down in GIMP or Photoshop.
Paint if your really disparate.

Then go into your profile settings and upload it.

Note: It can't be bigger than 80 by 80 pixels.

Does an Avatar have to be in any special format? I want to use an icon of Mario or draw a wand.

You can try JPG, BMP, GIF, etc. My image was actually 100 X 100 and it worked. I uploaded it from My Pictures folder in Windows XP.
