AOL Hometown FTP & Webpages... going... going... gone...

Post by UWLabs »

As of October 31, 2008
AOL Hometown will no longer provide access to, or host FTP sites.

That means many old, QBasic sites, including my own will finally go the way of the Dodo.

I suggest if anyone wants copies of junk (programs) written at UnderWARE Labs over the eons (even though I haven't written a thing in years), to go to...

http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/uwlabs/index.htm

Go before 10/31/2008 though!

It was fun while it lasted.
And I loved leaving the old stuff up, but everything eventually dies.

I do not if I'll even bother to keep my UWLabs AOL address.

Oh and for the record -- my Other psuedonym was Steelcharm.
I've had that account since January 1996; when It was America OnLine, and they charged by the hour!

Anyway, no more waxing nostalgic.
Visit if ya like, before they close the doors on me.

Looks like the old M/K site will also soon disappear then...

Shouldn't these sites be archived? I for one am nostalgic when I see old QB sites I went to from years ago. I'd be willing to host them for fellow QBers. I archived the old QB45.com and MrChrome's GUI Reviews site.

These sites should ABSOLUTELY be archived! I'm unfortunately in Nepal right now, so my internet connection is really terrible...otherwise, I would do it myself.

One thing I can provide, though, is free hosting. For eternity.

UWLabs: If you would like to keep your site online, I'd be glad to host it! I'll give you an FTP account and a subdomain name and you can upload it to my server.

The same goes for anyone else that's looking for free hosting for QB/FB-related sites.

Do a search through the Links section of this site (view source and search for "aol.com" or "hometown" or whatever). There are about 500 links, and they go do just about every QB site that was on the internet, circa 2004 when I made the links section.

Also, use one of those spidering program that will get all of the content hosted on the server by saving the content of each link on the site!

I created a website to download and archive websites that users wish: http://www.sixbynine.net/sitecollector/

It downloaded UnderWARE Labs perfectly. I'll see if I can get some more sites downloaded and archived.

But you can still archive it. The WayBack Machine is always available and Google's index of the sites should exist for a few more days at least.

qbasicfreak, didn't you say you'd archive it too? I just save 2 sites but one I missed was nickjc67's QBasic Tutorial site.

I had a lot of work this past week so I feel stupid for not getting around to archiving it. I'll probably be able to find it on the WayBack Machine but it's still very tough since the WayBack Machine's inconsistent.

I've got some studying to do so why don't you archive it? This is a community so it wouldn't be right to be the only one doing it.
