I know there is probably no room left in this issue :) but I think it would be a good idea if someone figured out how to print graphics already! I don't really understand PCL, but I know it can be done using PCL escape codes. Somebody should look into it who knows more than me!

Is anyone still interested in Qbinux? I know I haven't written an article for the last issue cause I didn't know ppl were still interested. In case you have forgotten or don't know what Qbinux is, you can find it almost everything about it on http://qbinux.tk
If you're still interested let me know.
QBinux is a Linux distribution with the aim of integrating the work of the vast community of free software developers at Pete's QBASIC Site in order to create a modern, performant, safe and easy to use system for system administrators and desktop users.

OK, I have a request: a batch file tutorial, and very deep in that.

Your request would be nice. There are many of these already on the web of various qualities. To write a truly good batch file tutorial is a very tedious task involving extensive testing of the examples included. It would be similar to writing a tutorial on QB programming as an extension of the QB manual.

On this piece of $h17 computer, it doesn't work unless you input http://WWW.mcclouth.tk (WWW uppercase for emphasis). But that's probably because a. This computer is a MAC 9.2 and b. The school has too many locks on it, so I still can't see it because it is hosted on freewebs. So, I can't be any help for your project for the next 3 hours :P

I second that. :D

Actually man, right now I'm reading a Winsock tutorial that uses C++. Here's the link:

http://www.hal-pc.org/~johnnie2/winsock.html

And if you don't have any experience with C++, check out my tutorials in the QB Express.

Try Googling "Winsock Tutorial" for more tuts.

pay-per-view?

Post by johnnie2 »

Sorry to slightly derail the thread:

I wrote the winsock tutorial linked above, and am considering taking it into a sort of pay-per-view mode; that is, visitors would pay a fee for each access to the tutorial.

The fee would be very small---perhaps $1 / access, with some constraints on what an "access" actually is.

What do you think? Do you consider the tutorial a great enough resource to pay $1 / access?

Again, my apologies for derailing the thread; feel free to PM me with any responses rather than posting.

The system would use a third-party payment service like Paypal. Therefore the tutorial could accept any currency supported by the third-party service, with the currency conversion done automatically.

However the value of the amount per access would remain the same across all currencies; the equivalent of USD $1, etc.

Thank you for the response. *bows*

I think people would just be like "Greedy bastard..." and ask their older brother (google) for some free ones. Plus, what if peeps don't have paypal and a too younge to get one (like me!)

Thank you for raising some interesting points.

Tis true the tutorial receives the majority of everyday traffic via Google searches, so I suppose this visitor segment won't take kindly to an access fee.

However, with the fee so small and (theoretically) the system so straightforward, I'd think a few would be willing to take a chance and spend a USD dollar-equivalent on what may be a quality tutorial.

I suppose this is what I'm gauging now; what a visitor's willingness would be to pay a small fee for access to a probably-quality tutorial. Already you guys are helping me to do this, so thanks again.

As for the visitor segment without access to Paypal, moving to pay-per-view would unfortunately be a loss on both sides (no income for me, no knowledge for you).

I personally think the majority of people would pass over it. Nobody's gonna read a tutorial where they have to pay for it and not know what their getting. Granted, it is a small amount of money. However, some people just don't have Paypal, and again, a lot of people would see it as an unnecessary waste of time to have to pay. If it was a book, with a lot of content, I could see it working, as long as you had a sample passage.

many insights in your post, thanks.

So, the not knowing what they're getting problem could be solved with a sample passage, and the unnecessary waste of time problem could be solved by very clearly outlining the steps needed to access (and streamlining the system!).

I for one would look elsewhere for free tutorials, there is almost always free tutorials on just about everything out there if you look hard enough. I think a lot of ppl would agree with me too. However if there was a lot of content say like that of an entire book, then I could see paying a small fee to view it, but would prolly still pass it up.
