Microsoft lifts update embargo on Windows 10 without an Anti-virus
In cases where Microsoft knows that the antivirus software was incompatible with the updates, it will continue to block the latter from reaching affected PCs.

Though the update barrier was removed for Windows 10, it will remain in place for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Users of those editions must continue to have a compatible AV package on board, one that sets the registry key. Alternately, customers can add the registry key themselves by following the "Setting the Registry Key" instructions here.

Key="HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" Subkey="SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat"
Value="cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc"
Type="REG_DWORD
Data="0x00000000

Everything you need to know about the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update
Microsoft is yet to announce when the update will be released, however, if history is to repeat itself, we can expect to see the update begin rolling out in April. Sources familiar with the matter tell us the date specifically could be April 10, which is Patch Tuesday for the month of April. This would make sense, as Microsoft did the same thing last April with the original Creators Update release.

While the update will begin its rollout in April, not everyone will get it straight away. Microsoft likes to roll out updates in waves to ensure there aren't any major issues with the update itself. Once it determines that the initial update wave went smoothly, it will slowly broaden availability of the update out to more people over time. This can take a few months to fully complete, so be patient.

If you're a Windows Insider, you can expect to receive the final release build of the Spring Creators Update before April.

Several old Control Panel elements such as Sounds, Fonts, Languages and more have been moved into the Settings app with this update, meaning some old settings and configurable options are no longer available in the Control Panel. You can find all the updated settings in the Windows 10 Settings app. Also worth noting is Quiet Hours has been renamed to Focus Assist and given lots of new options and features.
Control Panel is now only accessed from taskbar Search! Entering C will list it in drop down list.

Recent laptop problems:

1) Chrome browser gets slow until I close it and reopen. Edge popup warnings about Chrome...

2) Display blacks out every few days with error sound. Have to press power button quickly twice to resume.

3) Hear hard drive starts intermittently.

4) Taskbar rollover views of active windows stay visible and will not pop up in front of existing windows. Happened once.

5) Reboots may rearrange icons on desktop to left side.

17-year Microsoft veteran thinks re-org means end of Windows as a core business for Microsoft
Snead notes that change is part of life, for better or worse, and that the changes under Satya Nadella’s leadership have certainly been a positive for the shareholders. He remarks however that the name Microsoft, a portmanteau of microcomputer + software, may now be more suitably replaces with CloudServ – “a company that focuses on back-end cloud services and for whom Windows is astonishingly a non-core business.”
IE: Windows may become another Cloud Service for which we pay dearly...

Microsoft modifies open-source code, blows hole in Windows Defender
The bug, CVE-2018-0986, was patched on Tuesday in the latest version of the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine (1.1.14700.5) in Windows Defender, Security Essentials, Exchange Server, Forefront Endpoint Protection, and Intune Endpoint Protection. This update should be installed, or may have been automatically installed already on your device.
Microsoft open-sources original File Manager from the ‘90s so it can run on Windows 10
It’s a testament to the backward compatibility of Windows itself, especially that this was originally included in Windows more than 20 years ago. It’s as nostalgic as running Windows 95 on an Xbox One, Apple Watch, or Android smartwatch. If you’re a fan of original Windows File Manager you can download the app from GitHub and remind yourself of what computing used to look like years ago.
NVIDIA drops support for 32-bit operating systems
NVIDIA has now announced its plans to drop support for 32-bit OS PCs from April 2018. As part of this plan, NVIDIA will release Game Ready Driver upgrades, including performance enhancements, new features, and bug fixes only for 64-bit operating systems from now on. However, it will release citical security updates for 32-bit OS based PCs. This change affects the following operating systems:

Microsoft Windows 7
Microsoft Windows 8/8.1
Microsoft Windows 10
Linux
FreeBSD

M$ discovers blocking bug and delays the release of Windows 10 Spring Creators Update
Technically speaking, there's not actually a delay as Microsoft has never publicly committed to a particular release date -- but it still means that users will have to wait longer than expected for the update. While exact details of the problem have not been revealed, sources are referring to it as a "blocking bug" and it is said to have been discovered over the weekend.

The bug is expected to delay the release by a couple of weeks.

Microsoft is winding down development of Windows 10’s built in apps
While the firm’s built-in apps were indeed useful, many features like News, Weather etc are already duplicated by the homepage of Edge, and others like Mail and Calendar already have excellent web app replacements in Microsoft’s Office Web app suite.

We’ll see the full effects of this change play out over the next year, but its clear that Microsoft is already moving to the web as its next platform of choice.

Windows 10 Spring Creators Update Delayed Because of Higher Percentage of BSODs
The OS maker says it will create and test a new Windows 10 build that also includes the Blue Screen Of Death fixes, and ship that one instead of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17134, the build that was initially scheduled to be launched as the Spring Creators Update on April 10, last week.
Microsoft claims to make Chrome safer with new Windows Defender browser phishing extension
Microsoft justifies the new plugin with reference to a 2017 report that claims that the company's Edge browser blocked 99 percent of phishing attempts, compared to 87 percent by Chrome and 70 percent in Firefox. The plugin brings Edge's protection to Chrome, so if the theory holds, it should bump the browser up to 99 percent, too.

The new extension doesn't appear to disable Chrome's own checking (or at least, it doesn't seem to be doing so for me), so at the very least isn't likely to make you less safe, and with phishing being as widespread as it is, the extra protection probably doesn't hurt.
Chrome 66 arrives with autoplaying content blocked by default (video)
Google today launched Chrome 66 for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. The desktop release includes autoplaying content muted by default, security improvements, and new developer features. You can update to the latest version now using the browser’s built-in updater or download it directly from https://google.com/chrome.
Browser wars 2018: Microsoft Edge falls behind ... Internet Explorer?
Meanwhile, guess which browser is up substantially among Windows 10 users over the same period?

Chrome usage remained steady, at just a fraction over 56 percent.

Firefox usage fell dramatically, from 11 percent to 9 percent.

The big winner was, shockingly, Internet Explorer, which grew its share from 11.8 percent to 14.8 percent.

Google Chrome is freezing intermittently with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update
I upgraded to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update yesterday on my Eve V. The process was smooth but a couple of hours after installing the feature update, Google Chrome completely froze on my machine. The laptop wouldn't respond to any keystrokes, and while the mouse cursor moved, the software didn't respond to any clicks. The ctrl+alt+del method which is usually a savior in times like these didn't work either.

After a few minutes of messing around with different keys, I closed the lid of my V and then reopened it after a couple of seconds, after which Windows 10 started chugging along as if nothing had happened. At the time, I dismissed the issue, believing it to be a graphics driver issue with the relatively new Eve V. However, I have now used the April 2018 Update for nearly 24 hours and the same problem has presented itself no less than five times.
This appears to be the same issue I already have with my 32 bit laptop without the upgrade...
except my laptop totally blacks out and it does not happen as often.

I have used the power button tap method to put the laptop to sleep and wake up instead of closing and opening it.

Microsoft's Windows 10 'Redstone 5' Insider build introduces cloud clipboard
On May 9, Microsoft rolled out Redstone 5 Build number 17666 to Insider testers in the Fast and Skip Ahead rings. That build includes a number of the Sets windows-management features Microsoft officials discussed at Build 2018, its developer conference, this week.

But the main new feature in 17666 is the "new clipboard experience," which allows users to copy content across devices. By pressing WIN+V in this build, testers will see this new cloud clipboard. In addition to sharing items across devices by using the same roaming technology in Timeline and Sets. The cloud clipboard also lets users pin items they use all the time.

Google Project Zero targets Microsoft Edge Arbitrary Code Guard feature
Google’s Project Zero has targetted Microsoft yet again and this time Edge is at fault. According to a 31-page paper published by Ivan Fratric, Edge’s Arbitrary Code Guard isn’t powerful enough to stop advanced attacks.

This is not the first time Google has attacked Microsoft upfront for a potential vulnerability. In February, Google Researchers first exposed a mitigation bypass technique that allowed an advanced attacker to bypass Microsoft’s ACG. Microsoft rolled out ACG with Windows 10 Creators Update last year which disrupts the typical browser-based exploit chain that attackers use to target the browser’s memory.

What it costs Enterprises to keep up with Windows 10's upgrade tempo
In a recent report, Gartner Research put numbers to those costs, and concluded - spoiler alert! - that Microsoft's twice-annual feature updates were a greater burden on enterprises than the once-traditional upgrade-every-six-years tempo that businesses managed until 2015.

The report described a tool Gartner offered to clients, the "Windows 10 Feature Update Cost Model," which lets enterprises estimate costs for tackling one or two such updates each year. The goal of the tool: to "model and plan your cost and labor requirements" for those transitions.

Gartner's upgrade cost modeler comes as an Excel spreadsheet, and is available, along with the accompanying report, for $7,500.
Plus the latest W10 1803 upgrade took over 2 hours on each of my machines!

Windows 10 April 2018 Update problems: Users struggle with mystery 'black screen'
Windows 10 users over the past two days have begun reporting serious glitches after updating to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

As per an account on Reddit, after installing the update the computer appears to boot but then gets stuck with a black screen and no icons. There's also an error message that the Desktop file could not be accessed.

Users on Microsoft's forums have been reporting similar black-screen problems since May 14 after updating to the latest version of Windows 10. However, more reports have flowed in over the past two days.

Microsoft pushing Win10 version 1803 to PCs specifically set to avoid it
In Microsoft’s mixed-up world of update terminology (which has changed at least three times in the past year), “Semi-Annual Channel” – formerly “Current Branch for Business” – is supposed to delay upgrades until Microsoft determines that the new version of Win10 is fit for human consumption, or, presumably, paying business customers.

This comes on the heels of the original rollout three weeks ago, when those with the temerity to “Check for updates” were deemed seekers and treated to an upgrade with no option to stop it. It seems “Check” has a different meaning in Win10 update terminology.

Those who don’t have branch readiness set to “Semi-Annual Channel” – including all Win10 Home customers, who can’t set branch readiness – are considered cannon fodder, ready for the unpaid beta testing phase whenever Microsoft sees fit.
Avast update of CCleaner was not latest, had to update TWICE later in two days!

CCleaner frequent updates are as bad as having a virus... considering total removal...

Windows 10 Pro is a dead end for the enterprise
"[We] predict that Microsoft will continue positioning Windows [10] Pro as a release that is not appropriate for enterprises by reducing ... support and limiting access to enterprise management features," Stephen Kleynhans, a research vice president at Gartner and one of the research firm's resident Windows experts, said in a report he co-authored.

Microsoft's Windows 10 Pro occupies the middle ground between the consumer-grade Home and the corporate-level Enterprise in features, functionality and price. Because Enterprise versions of Windows have never been available to computer makers, Pro - sometimes, as in Windows 7, tagged Professional instead - has been the most popular pre-installed OS on new business PCs. (Corporations typically re-image new personal computers with Enterprise upon receipt of the devices.)

Hackers can summon Cortana to break into Windows 10 PCs
Microsoft has issued a Windows 10 security update to prevent hackers from breaking into PCs using Cortana. Microsoft’s digital assistant is built into every version of Windows 10, McAfee security researchers discovered it could be summoned from a lock screen to execute malicious software. Any potential hacker would need physical access to a PC, and McAfee details methods to get the digital assistant to index files from a USB drive and execute them.

McAfee recommends turning off Cortana on the lock screen to prevent the attack, which is particularly relevant in business environments. While Microsoft has patched this vulnerability with its latest security updates released yesterday, many machines won’t be running the latest updates just yet.
This second Tuesday update is available now!

Microsoft is using AI to make Windows 10 updates smoother
The company says that it is "seeing higher satisfaction numbers, fewer known issues, and lower support call volumes compared to previous Windows 10 releases." Microsoft piloted the program during last Fall's Creator's Update rollout, gathering data on the types of Windows 10 devices that had good update experiences. It then trained its AI model to recognize those types of devices and target them for earlier updates. In addition to a better upgrade experience, Microsoft says that using AI has allowed the updates to go faster, reaching 250 million devices in less than half the time the Fall update took.
