Adding Bluetooth and devices to computers

Post by burger2227 »

I recently bought a Bluetooth mouse that can be used on tablets, computers and cell phones.

The cover peels off to reveal 2 AAA batteries included. A Blue button on the bottom starts the pairing with a blue LED blinking on top.

When I tried to connect it to the existing BT on my XP laptop it just counted down waiting for the mouse to click a button:
Image
The mouse never moved the pointer so I had to use the USB connected mouse...

Problem is that my laptop would not accept it without adding a USB Blue Tooth dongle:
Image
The cheaper Link Depot dongle installed with a small CD that I couldn't use on my vertical DVD on my Win 7 machine.
It does have a small flasing indicator light, but it can only be seen in a dark room.

This $5 Link Depot device adds a Wizard that works to the Bluetooth menu when clicking on the symbol in the task bar.
Image
The old Wizard did not work even after I updated the BT software. Dell only had Logitech Set Point updates however.

The Wizard displays local BT devices. I selected the mouse:

I chose not to require a passkey for the mouse. A BT keyboard I added required a documented passkey of 11111111:
Image
I entered the documented keyboard passkey on the second button choice and Next. I entered the key and pressed Enter to confirm.

The backlit BT keyboard has a blue power LED and blinking blue pairing LED when the Connect button has been pressed to pair once:

This keyboard also works with my Nexus 7 tablet. It was meant to hold a larger tablet, but I just fold it up on my lap anyhow.

BTW, the existing laptop BT module is hidden in the battery compartment near the right side on my Dell Inspiron 1505:
Image
It was said on a web site that the module cost $60 back when Dell sold them after market. It must be way outdated by now.

I tried to add the mouse to my Nexus 7 tablet, but it never connected. Just kept pairing...until the blue LED finally stopped blinking.

Didn't really need it, but I thought I'd try. Probably never heard of one eh? No USB port for a dongle either.

I ordered a OTG(On the Go) Micro male to USB female dongle to see if I can add capacity. Will let you know if and how it works...

Windows 7 never found the mouse either so I used a Utech BT USB dongle on it. Win 7 is supposed to be able to find BT:
Image
It has a nice blue LED that doesn't really tell you anything, but it is pretty...it cost about $10.

The mouse installed pretty easily and both the dongle(BCM20702A0) and Motorola Bluetooth Mouse show up in Devices and Printers:

These Bluetooth dongles can also let you access cell phones too! My Cricket Samsung SCH-R261 flip cell phone shows up but I cannot access anything.

During my vacation I was using the laptop and closed the lid. Normally it would sleep in standby until
I moved the mouse to wake it up, but the Bluetooth mouse could not wake it back up!

Normally a USB mouse has properties that allow it to wake the computer up as shown below:
Image
Device Manager listed two HID-compliant mouse devices when both were connected at once.

The Motorola Bluetooth mouse has no such Power Management property!
Image
So to wake up the laptop from Standby, I had to move the USB mouse instead.
