Do not install last MSE update to avoid XP End Warning box

Post by burger2227 »

Microsoft Update may try to download the last XP update for Microsoft Security Essentials as KB2949787. Don't allow it!

Use the Custom Install option and uncheck the MSE Update. The last update will turn the MSE icon red forever and pop up a disgusting Warning box EVERY TIME at Startup. It may also pop up at other times.

Unchecking the MU install will hide it from further updates hopefully.

MSE can be updated internally in the program itself for new malware definitions without the last update. MSE will still be updated by M$ even for XP!

I tested all of this on my own XP in the last week! So far so good.

You cannot UNINSTALL the update! Uninstalling MSE ends usage.

Wish I'd known this before the wife's middle/old laptop auto-updated. Then again, she rarely uses it anymore, and the only time it bothers me is when she is bothered by it. Mine is absolutely antique enough to have an RS232 and LPT port, and thus is too hardware deficient to run XP. Most people are amazed it still works at all. lol

Here's the MSE install program: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/844 ... nstall.exe

UNINSTALL Microsoft Security Essentials before re-installing.

I happened to find it on my laptop after I had to uninstall the old one when it started turning red on startup.
After I installed, it updated and did a first scan.

Just remember to make sure to only update MSE with the program itself and not through Microsoft Updates.

Set Microsoft Updates to tell you when Updates are available! When a Microsoft Update is available, uncheck any intended for MSE. Specifically KB2949787

Once an update is removed, it should not try to install again later, so you should never get the red popup box again.

After MSE was done the scan it went here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... ie_o_xpeos

After a reboot, the MSE program was not authenticated by M$ so it was disabled and would not run.

I still had to remove it or it probably would have nagged me on every reboot! OH WELL....
