Re: New version of my old DOS GUI, Costa

It sure has been a long time! Hope all is well with you, too. A bit mind-blowing to think, that is has been more than a decade since our last interaction. Maybe the last time we chatted was about one of my contributions to QB Express - or maybe about something else entirely, who remembers after so l...

New version of my old DOS GUI, Costa

Hi all, Not sure how many of the "old guys" are still around here - I myself haven't been around for a long time. In fact, my last post was in December of 2006! After a long hiatus from BASIC, I some time ago acquired an old IBM PS/2 computer, and thought it would be fun to put my old GUI ...

It will only take 99% of the CPU when the other programs you have running aren't using CPU. When another program wants to do something, NTVDMs CPU usage drops automatically. It's no problem, unless you're using a laptop on battery (heavy CPU usage drains the battery faster).

Look up the CSRLIN and POS functions in the qb help file, they should do the trick. You can use them to determine where on the screen the cursor is.

The version of my GUI you tried out is outdated, it was released about half a year ago and doesn't have a windowing engine (it just draws windows so it looks like it does). It doesn't use VIEW and WINDOW, and it doesn't do much. The reason nothing has been released for such a long time is that I've ...

You can't, you can only have one viewport. But you can change the coordinates of the viewport each time you draw a window. That's the method I use in my GUI.

What I'm doing is this: I draw the window, and set a viewport where the controls on it should be. Then they won't go outside the window. Then I do the same with the next window, and so on. So I call VIEW each time I draw a window.

One example is in a GUI, where you can set a viewport when drawing a window. That way controls won't go outside the window, but will get clipped instead. I find that pretty useful.

Is this the sound you're looking for?

wawawawawaaaaa.wav

I found it on Google. I can't give you the PLAY code for it, but maybe someone else can now that they've heard it (if it's the right sound, that is).

It works again now. Strange, while I was browsing the site last nigh my browser suddenly gave me 404 errors on the entire page, and until 10 minutes ago I weren't able to see anything.

It's the LCD screen that does it. My LCD monitor has an "AUTO" button, which will align the image correctly. If your screen doesn't have such a button, try going through the on-screen menu on it.

According to Google, gpib-vdd.dll is a 16-bit Windows file. So I'd say it's your friends computer, not your program, as QB 4.5 doesn't use Windows DLLs.
